Poker is a card game played between 2 or more players. It can be played with any number of cards but is most often played with 6. It is a game where the object is to win the pot. This can be done by either having the highest poker hand or by betting the most on your hand.

Before any cards are dealt there are two mandatory bets put into the pot by the players to the left of the button. These bets are called the blinds and help to create an incentive for players to play a hand.

Once everyone has their 2 cards there is a round of betting. After the betting is completed one more card is revealed, this is called the flop. There is another round of betting and then a final card is revealed, this is called the river.

You can use any combination of your 2 personal cards and the 5 community cards to make a poker hand. There are a few basic hands that tend to win more frequently than others. A full house contains 3 matching cards of one rank and 2 matching cards of another. A flush contains 5 cards of consecutive rank but from more than one suit. A straight contains 5 cards in sequence but from different suits. A pair is two cards of the same rank. High card breaks ties.

When it is your turn to bet you can choose whether to call any existing bets, raise them or fold (sliding your cards away face-down and not participating in that hand anymore). If no one else calls then you have to continue to ‘the showdown’ where players reveal their poker hands.
